The London Book Launch and Mixr Event of the fictional novel, ‘Lagos to London’ by Lola Aworanti-Ekugo took place at The Africa Center, 66 Great Suffolk St, London by 6pm BST on Friday 26th August 2022.
‘Lagos to London’ book tells a story of the reality in Nigeria today where most young people are leaving the country in a bid to seek greener pastures. The novel takes readers on a journey of two Nigerians, Remi Coker and Nnamdi Okonkwo from different backgrounds who leave the shores of Nigeria full of hope to further their education abroad. The story follows their journey of newfound freedom, the realities of life in the United Kingdom, and the dilemma of whether to remain or return to Nigeria.
The event was anchored by the multi-award-winning broadcast journalist and communications strategist at Channels Television, Mrs Juliana Olayinka, and graced with the presence of the amiable Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola represented by Ambassador Cyprian Heen. The Diaspora community, book lovers, bloggers, book club members, and other distinguished guests were in attendance.
The event was opened by board member and representative from The Africa Centre, Mr. Nzube Ufodike followed by a special address delivered by Ambassador Cyprian Heen on behalf of the Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
An engaging discussion panel on “Brain drain vs Brain gain in today’s evolving globalized economy: Assessing the diaspora impact in Africa” was moderated by the lovely Ms. Fope Adelowo – Principal, Helios lnvestment Partners (UK). The esteemed panellists, Mr. Harry Burns – Vice President UK, Crestview Strategy, Mrs. Agnes Gitau Partner – GBS Africa, Mr. Kola Aina – Founding Partner, Ventures Platform, Mrs. Confidence Staveley – Founder and Executive Director Cybersafe Foundation, Ms. Mo Akindolie – Assistant Registrar, RCPCH and Mr Oluseye Olusoga CEO/Management Parthian Partners Ltd gave an interesting view on the diaspora impact in Africa.
The event was filled with poetry performed by the talented Anjola and the official launch of the novel was performed by Prof. Oba Nsugbe QC SAN, Board Chairman, The African Centre followed by closing remarks by Mr Kelechi Ekugo – Country Director, US-Nigeria Council, book signing section by the author and an evening of cocktails and networking.
